Job Type: Full time, contract (4 months) – starting May to August 2022 – with a possibility of extension depending on funding

Salary: $20.00/hr

Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday

Location: Applicants will be required to work from home, located anywhere within Canada.

Position Summary

Under the supervision and direction of Obesity Canada’s Director of Advocacy and Public Engagement, the primary role of the research coordinator is to support the activities of Obesity Canada’s Community Action Team.  Specifically,  the Community Action Team is planning on collecting data to support the development of a National Obesity Care framework through a national survey.  The research coordinator will contribute to the development of data collection, analysis and reporting methods, in addition to coordinating and supporting key components of the project, including:

  • creating meaningful engagement of team members, including scheduling 
  • information gathering through key informant interviews
  • feedback via focus groups and structured summary reports
  • preparing summary/update documents or presentations

The secondary role of the research coordinator is to provide support to the development of the National Obesity Care Framework. In this role, the research coordinator will support additional research initiatives within new and existing projects and proposals. For example, assist in development of grant proposals, research protocols, research ethics submission, conference presentations and manuscript preparation.

The successful candidate will have an interest in bridging gaps between research and practice in order to build more effective health systems and must have exceptional computer skills with a solid understanding of office procedures and practices. The candidate must possess strong academic writing skills and experience writing for academic audiences including abstracts for conference presentations and publications for peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate must be motivated to work productively on their own, but is also able to work as part of a team.

Experience in working with diverse project partners and stakeholders, survey development and data collection are strong assets. The successful candidate must be committed to being respectful, ethical, culturally-sensitive and mindful of practice related to evaluation. A research coordinator who has a successful experience with Obesity Canada, and is thinking of pursuing a career in an applicable field, could be retained by the employer at the conclusion of the placement.

 Responsibilities / Activities 

  • Support survey development 
  • Support survey dissemination through focused outreach with Obesity Canada partners and other organizations in related disease states.
  • Assist with development of survey promotional material for social media 
  • Organizes meetings of the Community Action Team as needed and supports these meetings by preparing slides or documents to keep the team updated on the project. 
  • Monitors data collection and prepares preliminary reports for various stakeholders (Community Action Team, Board of Directors) 
  • Work with other members of the OC team, (social media, communications etc)  to coordinate a survey dissemination strategy.  
  • Performs literature searches and reviews to support the research project and future publications/presentations

Qualifications and experience:

  • Post-secondary education with a degree or diploma in a health related field (preferred)
  • Experience developing and conducting community-based research and evaluation
  • Past experience in research/literature reviews/academic writing an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse stakeholders including persons with lived experience, families and clinician
  • Excellent writing skills, particularly the ability to communicate complex material in clear language for multiple audiences
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to dynamic project needs
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently as well as in teams
  • Works extremely well under pressure and is able to multitask on concurrent projects with competing priorities
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; Proficiency in French is an asset
  • Detail oriented and strong organizational skills
  • Passionate about healthcare equity
